A good place to look for miscellaneous supplies. Do-gooders and charitable types often restock its shelves for the more needy.

Cyrus Bradford Asker
Mud caked his black converse, it felt like his feet were bleeding from walking so many miles, especially with the wrong shoes. Creased and wrinkled from his travels on foot, he couldn't think which hurt more, his feet or his back. A brown pack was slung over his shoulders which held his dinner, water, a few photos of his dog, a Browning BDM, a weather worn sweatshirt and several other scraps he found along the way. He approached the front of the gas station and pulled open the shattered door, which amused him. He walked directly to the back of the corner store, took his seat on the counter, placed the dog photo in front of him and began to eat his food. tags:: / notes::

Zara & Skye CrossBoth exhausted and starving, a mother and child walked along the street, approaching the gas station they were relying on to have some rations left behind for them. The white-haired woman gazed down at her daughter with a weak smile, brushing a hand through her soft strands. Feeling bad for dragging the girl around for as long as she did, she scooped the girl up into her arms and placed her on her hip. “My stomach hurts.” Skye whispered into Zara’s shoulder, wrapping her arms around her neck. This had been the fourth time she had complained about being hungry in the last couple of hours. Being born into the apocalyptic world, she understood that times were hard and saving food was a necessity, but she felt like her stomach was going to eat itself at any moment. “I know, Honey. Let’s look in here real quick.” Zara whispered back with a sigh. Every complaint coming from her daughter’s mouth felt like a knife twisting around in her heart. She didn’t want this life for Skye. Zara stumbled up to the entrance of the gas station, and slowly placed her daughter down before unhooking her old machete from her worn out backpack strapped to her back. She gripped the weapon, and held a hand out for Skye to stay where she was as she stepped through the shattered door cautiously. Tags: Kairos

Cyrus Bradford Asker In the middle of enjoying his dinner, the shattered door opened and the bell chimed, alerting Cyrus of another presence. He swiftly reached for his bag and retrieved his handgun, sliding his meal off of his lap and onto the filthy ground. He gently crawled off of his perch and used it as protection, crouching behind it and using the sounds as his advantage, the photo of his dog was swept away by the sudden gust of wind and onto the floor infront of the counter.

Zara & Skye CrossZara glanced back once more at Skye, who stood where she was placed as ordered. Zara nodded at her once and slowly continued on into the building. Her worn black boots crushed the glass from the shattered door lightly as she walked, scanning the aisles with caution. Moving slow, her eyes caught onto a couple of spare rations on the shelves. She jogged over and snatched them up, tucking them in her arms protectively. She stopped at the counter, listening carefully for anymore signs of life. When she saw her mother go still, Skye took a tiny step forward, “Mama?” Zara glanced around once more then relaxed, too exhausted physically and mentally to bother to check behind the counter. “Okay, come here.” She waved her over with a small smile. Skye breathed in with a smile and hurried through the door to join her, but her eyes quickly got caught by a certain picture of a doggie on the ground. “A puppy!”

A soft sigh escaped his mouth as a child's voice sounded along with an adult, assumed to be their mom. He tucked his gun into his belt and rose to his feet, "his name is Bosco," he smiled softly, his expression warming. The dog was large with a brindled coat and an extravagant ruff of fur around it's neck and a long tail that curved like the hook of a coat hanger. He reached for his bag and pulled out a few more photos. "He ran off a few months ago," his smile turned into a frown. "Name's Cyrus," he introduced himself calmly.

Zara & Skye Cross Just as Skye had gone to pick up the picture of the adorable dog, she looked up to see the teen stand from his hiding spot. She straightened up with the picture in hand, her eyes lighting up. He didn’t appear scary, he had more pictures of his dog! Without a care in the world, she hurried over to get a closer look at the pictures. Zara, on the other hand, was not happy. She grabbed Skye by the waist at high speed and carefully pulled her behind her, dropping the rations she had just collected on the ground. She clutched her machete in her steady hand, it being slightly raised at Cyrus, distrust shown in her stormy gray eyes. “ What were you doing?” Her mama bear side came out, looking from him to the part of the counter he crouched behind. There was no way she would allow her daughter to get into arms reach of a stranger without being sure there wasn’t anything sketchy about him. “ Momma..” Skye whined softly but didn’t move from her spot. She grabbed a hold of Zara’s pants leg, peeking over at the stranger with more curiosity than fear. Tags: Kairos

Suddenly taken by surprise by the mother's outrage, Cyrus took a step back and raised his hands slightly before speaking, "well, taking note you guys walked in here and caught me in a state of vulnerability, I took the closest cover I could," he paused, straightening up with guilt tracing his deep orbs the color of mid-ocean. "Would you have rather had me standing with a gun pointed at you?" he said calmly, voice rasping at the end of his sentence. He frowned slightly.

Zara & Skye CrossZara’s glare only got harsher at the mention of a gun. She lifted her weapon up higher at him and took a slow step back, forcing Skye to do the same. Without taking her eyes off the boy, she stretched a leg out to kick the rations closer to herself with her foot. She took a step in front of the food so Skye could gather it up without coming into view of the stranger. “Skye, we’re leaving. Grab the food for me, okay?” “But, you said-“ Skye’s expression fell, looking up at her mother with the rations clutched in her tiny arms. “ I know, we’ll find another place to stay..” For a split second, her expression appeared pained. They were both relying on the gas station as a temporary resting place, but Zara didn’t feel safe with the idea of sharing it with Cyrus when he had a gun on hand, especially with her young child close by. With a frown plastered across his face, he held one hand up as he reached into his belt for his gun, but slowly. With a sigh and examining the carved symbols on the gun he placed it on the counter, "just take it," he shoved the remaining photos of his dog into his backpack, allowing the younger girl to keep the other. He gathered his meal and slung his bag over his shoulder, at this point he couldn't stand complete solitude anymore, he just wanted someone to speak to and it felt as if he was losing his mind. He was annoyed with himself for bringing the weapon up, but who's to say he would last another day? With a dip of his head, he made his way to the back room of the gas station, heading for the nearest exit.

Zara & Skye Cross As soon as Cyrus stepped away from the gun, Zara rushed forward to snatch it up in her free hand. She watched after the young man, slumping her shoulders forward with a bit of relief… but then the guilt hit her. Sure, she found him suspicious but his act in just giving up his gun gave her second thoughts. She clenched her jaw, battling with herself internally before she finally slammed the gun and the machete up on the counter. “ Wait!” She called out to him with a small sigh. She pushed the weapons off to the side where none of them could reach it, a fair compromise in her eyes. “ You don’t have to go..” She glanced back at Skye hesitantly before waving her closer. Skye’s expression lifted almost immediately, and she hurried over to her mother, allowing her to lift her up onto the counter to sit. She handed off the rations to Zara, kicking her legs out back and forth with a smile. She looked over at Cyrus then the picture of his dog in her hand. She shifted it around at all angles before placing it down on the counter beside her. “ I like your doggie.” She commented happily, almost as if nothing tense had just happened. Tags: Kairos

The teenager's head rolled back as the adult's voice filled the tense atmosphere, turning on his heel he stood there momentarily. He debated on just going to T59 to continue his search for his lost dog or to stay the night, running his free hand through his dirty hair he sighed, hesitantly walking back to the family. "I'll be staying here for the night, but if you want me gone just say so, I don't want to be a bother," Cyrus remarked before his blue eyes fell onto the toddler, a smile tugging at his lips once more. "Thank you," he paused, "I've been trying to find him for a while, perhaps one of you have seen him?"

Zara & Skye Cross Zara picked up the picture of the dog, taking a couple of seconds to think back to all the walking they did earlier. “ Sorry, we haven’t seen him. If we did, Skye would have claimed him as her own whether he liked it or not.” She lifted a hand to run her fingers through the little girl’s hair gently but paused her movements as soon as she realized she just freely gave away her daughter’s name. She silently cursed at herself and slowly shook her head. It was bound to come out eventually. “ I wanna help!” Skye announced, her wide blue eyes locking on Cyrus pleadingly. As long as she got to meet the dog afterwards, she would be willing to do anything to find him. However, her attention was quickly stolen when Zara busted open one of the rations and handed it out to her. Little Skye took the food eagerly, digging her little hands in to start eating. Cyrus Bradford Asker Cyrus laughed slightly, "I'm sure he wouldn't have minded much," he remarked as he slid down the wall of the gas station. "I'm not entirely sure if your momma would be too fond of that. And there is no guarantee that he's-" Cyrus cut himself off, he didn't want to upset the kid. The thought was a constant pinprick at the back of his mind, Bosco could've gotten snatched by those walking corpses, attacked by a Cerberus, or simply died of starvation. Another frown smacked him in the face as the horrid thoughts of his best friend mangled and all danced about his mind, tormenting it. He whisked away his sudden pause and started eating again, eyes focused on the meal and then to the filthy floor.

Zara & Skye Cross Skye paused her munching to study him, her deep blue eyes swirling with more curiosity. She looked back to her mother who offered her a small smile, gently stroking the child’s cheek affectionately. Skye dug into the pocket of her dirty baby blue sweater to pull out a polaroid picture, offering it out to Cyrus with a smile full of pride, “ I had a doggie too, see? His name was Crackle.” The polaroid picture was slightly bent and worn on the edges but was surprisingly in good condition to be in the procession of a five-year-old. It appeared to be a family photo. Zara had a slightly younger Skye cradled in her arms with a skinny, dark haired man with shaggy hair and blue eyes at her side who was cradling a black German Shepard instead. All of them in the photo smiled happily back at whoever was gazing at the picture. It was clear the photo was taken after the fallout, but they seemed just as happy being together as a family. They made due with what they had. Zara stared at the photo for a long moment, swallowing hard as she was quickly reminded of the loss they have experienced. She remained silent and slowly sat down, instead turning her attention to Skye. Skye was young, more accepting of the fact that the rest of her family was gone, but Zara knew it was simply because she didn’t understand how permanent it was. It wouldn’t be long before her daughter started asking questions. She took a deep breath and packed up the rest of the rations in her backpack, she’d only eat when it was absolutely necessary. Skye’s survival was all that mattered. Tags: Kairos
